We all know that it is very important to drink water to keep ourselves hydrated. Besides hydration, consuming water has other benefits too like to regulate body temperature, prevent constipation, promote digestion, flush out toxins and so on. But don’t forget to drink appropriate amount of water as any excess amount may cause over hydration and can lead to serious health conditions.
Due to excessive intake of water, one can suffer from problems like nausea, vomiting, headache, and change in mental state leading to confusion and disorientation. It can also reduce sodium level in blood to a dangerously low level resulting in severe consequences such as cramps, muscle weakness, seizure, spasm, unconsciousness or even coma.
We feel the urge to drink more water during or after exercise. Even after consuming certain medicines also, we feel very thirsty and drink a lot of water. Similar is the case with diabetic patients. In all the above cases, we drink excess water due to some compulsion and this psychiatric condition is called schizophrenia. This causes water retention in our body and lead to over hydration.
When we suffer from problems like liver disease, kidney malfunctioning, congestive heart failure and so on we need to drink more water than required and hence get over hydrated.
There are two types of over hydration- Water Retention and Excessive Water Intake. Water Retention is the condition when we are unable to get rid of excessive water. This can lead to a condition known as hyponatremia in which the salt as well as water levels in the blood are altered negatively.
In case of excessive water intake, our kidneys do not function properly to expel excessive water from our body thereby leading to some health related problems. Therefore we need to keep a check on the amount of water we drink. Do not drink more than one liter of water at a time and if you encounter any medical issue like congestive heart failure or kidney malfunctioning, consult your doctor immediately. When you sweat your body loses electrolytes like potassium and sodium, so at this time consume sports beverages. To ward off dehydration, drink water at regular intervals of time instead of taking it at one go. When you rarely feel thirsty, it means your water intake is adequate enough and you no need to consume more at that time. Make sure to drink water when you do strenuous activity so that you remain hydrated but don’t overdo anything as excess of anything is bad.
